Gamak and Welcome to Murdudjurl

Join us for an afternoon to remember at Murdudjurl Community. This unique experience will give you an insight into community life in the heart of Kakadu, while learning new skills and tasting local bush tucker. 

Itinerary:

  • Welcome to Country: Take a guided walking tour of the billabong and community and learn about the history of the Murumburr clan families and their country. 
  • Billy Tea and Damper: Gather around the fire for traditional Billy Tea and Damper and engage in conversations with fellow travelers and the local community.
  • Cultural Activities: Weaving using locally collected dried Pandanus plant dyed with natural colours or learn traditional painting methods. 
  • Bush Tucker Experience: Sample our traditional foods, what you taste will depend which season we are in and what food source is in abundance at that time. 
  • Visit Old Patonga Community School Art Gallery: Marvel at remarkable art pieces such as woven Pandanus earrings and bangles, paintings by talented local artists, and an array of authentic and distinctive works. Pieces are available for sale. 


What to Bring:

  • Guests must have their own AWD vehicle to access the road to Patonga Homestead. 

  • Remember to wear comfortable enclosed shoes for walking, sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent. Water is available, but please bring a bottle.

  • Meet at the Patonga Homestead car parking - follow our signs from the Kakadu Highway, less than a 15 minute drive from Cooinda Lodge.

  • All Children joining in, in the activities will need to buy a ticket.
